Aiming for the Top: A Grand Stevie Awards Winner’s Path to Success

Posted by Maggie Gallagher on Wed, Jun 18, 2014 @ 11:12 AM

Melissa Sones Consulting in New York, New York, won a Grand Stevie Award in the 2013 Stevie Awards for Women in Business, the world's premier business awards program for women.  The 2014 Stevie Awards for Women in Business is now accepting entries, with a July 23 early-bird deadline.  Review the entry kit here.

Melissa SonnesNewThis past November, Grand Stevie Award trophies were presented for the first time in the Stevie Awards for Women in Business to the five organizations that submitted the best body of entries to the competition.  Also a first, the name at the top of that list was not for an individual or company that had been a winner: it went to Melissa Sones Consulting, which had successfully entered several of its clients in the competition.

We asked Melissa for some insight on this success.  What, for example, did she tell her clients were the most important reasons for entering a professional awards competition such as the Stevie Awards for Women in Business?

“First, I tell clients or potential clients that awards marketing is the number one form of marketing in the world,” explained Melissa. “Just look around you: car companies run TV commercials noting that they are number one on J.D. Power and Associates; others on TV say they are topping Angie’s List. There are many examples.

The Power of Awards

“Second, I tell them I have had personal experience with the power of awards. I won a major award years ago and it changed my life and brought opportunities my way that might not otherwise have come. In my experience winning awards has worked, so I encourage my clients to win awards themselves so that they can do the same for their businesses, ultimately attracting lots more business.

The Thrill of Winning

“Reason number three is the awards ceremony itself.  While I focus on the applications and the actual winning—so far, 99% of those we have entered for major business awards have won something—getting up in front of a large audience comprising a wide range of business owners is a thrill. That’s why I took a table at the 2013 Stevie Awards for Women In Business Awards and encouraged my clients to come. Four of them won Gold Stevies, and it was very exciting!

“A fourth reason is that I want my clients to have a marketing tool that they can use over and over again. Win once and you can put it out there forever. I love that, and it’s effective.

Value for Money

“Finally, there is the cost. As a major marketing tool for a company of any size from sole proprietor to corporation, awards marketing is extremely affordable—a big bang for your buck, as they say. Pay a very affordable fee and we work to help you win. We are also “winner spotters,” so if we believe you can win, you usually do.”

Winning a Grand Award

We asked Melissa what winning a Grand Award at the 2013 Stevie Awards for Women in Business had meant to her.

“I was surprised when I won!” she told us. “It meant that the focus of my company–the only awards consulting company of its kind in the U.S.—is working.”

Additionally, Melissa told us that her awards consulting company does more work with the Stevie Awards than with any other awards competitions.  As she puts it: “Everything about it makes sense for the many businesses I work with. The applications themselves allow for creativity without being too time-consuming; the team at the Stevies is available whenever I need help, such as when filing an application or following up on a trophy order; and the awards have names or titles that I happen to like from a marketing standpoint.  Winning a Women in Business Award or an American Business Award or an International Business Award appeals to my clients, most of whom have come back for more awards, with the Stevie Awards for Women In Business at the top of the list so far!

Living in Integrity

Melissa has been a professional writer her entire adult life, and running a marketing awards company incorporates that.  As she told us: “I have always done exactly what I want to do ONLY if what I want is in my Integrity, no matter what, and I continue to do that. The latter is part of Living In Integrity.”

Continued Melissa: “I also do business differently and it works! I use a tool that I share with clients and with others. Tools For Living Free is a special two-sided educational publication based on talks given by Roger B. Lane, Ph.D., the Founder/Director of Cosmos Tree, Inc., a nonprofit Educational Foundation based in New York City. The Tools For Living Free pamphlet that I most often use–and which gives me and my clients a roadmap for doing business–is titled How To Run A Business (Your Life) Spiritually.  It shows the importance of clear communication; of ‘seeing all things anew’; of letting go of any attachments to results (huge for me when it comes to new business); and the importance of handling the tasks ‘that will make a difference.’ In business, that could be tasks that move the company forward, i.e. newer, more creative options (instead of the same old same old) or something that is a service to others.”

Melissa is certainly providing a service to others, as her achievements testify.

5 Ways to Grow Your Email Marketing List, by a Stevie Awards Winner

Posted by Maggie Gallagher on Mon, Jun 02, 2014 @ 08:46 PM

Janine Popick is CEO & Founder of VerticalResponse in San Francisco, California, USA, and the winner of a Gold Stevie Award for Female Executive of the Year-Business Services (up to 2,500 Employees) in the 2013 Stevie Awards for Women in Business.

The 1405VRPopick2014 Stevie Awards for Women in Business competition is now open.  The early-bird entry deadline is July 23.  GET THE ENTRY KIT HERE.

“How do I build or get an email marketing list?” As the leader of an email marketing software company for the last 13 years that’s been the most common question I’ve heard whenever I’ve talked to small businesses.

I’m also often asked if it’s okay to use a purchased, rented, or scraped email list.

My answer? Nope. Nada. Not so much. There are no shortcuts to growing an engaged and loyal base of subscribers, fans, and followers.

In reality, rather than get you the results you want, that purchased list could tarnish your relationship with your recipients—not a great way to start out.

So, how do you grow a list with engaged subscribers who want to hear from your business? I have five sure-fire ways, so read on!

1. Offer Value

In exchange for giving you their email address, subscribers expect to get something of value. Whether it’s a discount, exclusive deal, advance access, tips, how-tos, advice, or something else, make sure the value is stated on your email sign-up form.

2. Give ’Em a Sneak Peek

You can give folks a sneak peek of what they’ll get by joining your email list. How? By providing tangible examples of your emails, newsletters, and invitations right on your website. This gives them a chance to “try before they subscribe.”

At VerticalResponse, we archive our weekly VR Buzz e-newsletter so folks can preview what they’ll see before they hand over their email addresses. Also, once they’re a subscriber, if they happen to miss a newsletter, they always have easy access to it.

3. Subscribe (Opt-in) Everywhere

Sending emails to your subscribers is all based on getting their permission first. Here’s where your “join my list” form—also called an opt-in form—comes into play. An opt-in form is priceless because, when people willingly give you their email addresses, they’re saying they want to hear from you. And by getting opt-in permission, you build a relationship and gain trust. It’s a win-win for both parties.

Tip: Make sure you keep your forms short, and easy.  Also, give folks the opportunity to sign up whenever they contact or interact with your business, including from multiple pages on your website (homepage, contact page, pricing page, etc.), your blog, your Facebook profile, transactional emails such as receipts and invoices, and at events or tradeshows.

4. Get Them to Pass It On

The ability to forward an email to a friend seems to have been around since the dawn of email marketing (trust me, I was there), but it’s amazing how many people still don’t include the forwarding ability in their emails.  This is a missed opportunity, especially now that people are totally accustomed to sharing any messages that they think friends or co-workers might get value from or enjoy.

Encourage the forward by saying something like: “Share this email with friends you think might enjoy it!” All email service providers should allow you to insert a forward to a friend link very easily when you create your email. The bonus is that an email service will usually include an option to sign up for a mailing list in these forwarded emails, and that will add to list growth!

5. (Social) Sharing is Caring

Make sure that every email you send can be shared by your current subscribers on their social media networks. Most email service providers let you include social media buttons in your emails that allow recipients to share your message on Facebook and Twitter.  Reporting and tracking will allow you to see how many people are sharing your messages.

There you have it:  Five sure-fire (and easy) ways to grow your email list. Have any to add to my list? Share them in the comments!

Stevie Awards Winner and Judge Jessica Eaves Mathews Talks Winning, Judging, and Lawyering

Posted by Michael Gallagher on Thu, Nov 07, 2013 @ 01:54 PM

Jessica Eaves Mathews is CEO of Leverage a Lawyer LLC in Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA and chaired the final judging committee for the Company/Organization categories of the 2013 Stevie Awards for Women in Business, the world's top honors for female entrepreneurs, executives, employees, and the organizations they run.  We talked to Jessica about judging, the law, and what motivates her day-to-day life.

Jessica Eaves Mathews was enthusiastic about the Stevies judging process.  “It was amazing to win several Stevie Awards last year, but an even greater honor to be asked to chair the final judging committee for the categories in which we were honored,” Jessica told us.

Jessica Eaves Mathews“It wasn’t until I did the judging this year that I realized how truly incredible it was that my company and I both won awards last year.  The caliber of companies and women who were Finalists in this year’s Women in Business Awards was staggering.  I found myself inspired to do more and make a bigger impact as a result of the work they are doing in the world.  What an accomplished, amazing group of women!”

Legal Advice

As the founder of Leverage a Lawyer, we couldn’t let Jessica go without asking for legal advice, specifically what working women should know about the law that could contribute to their success.

“I always say that addressing the legal foundation for your business makes a powerful and profound statement,” said Jessica.  “It is sending the message to the world that you are to be taken seriously, and it is honoring your hard work as a business owner or innovator.”

According to Jessica:  “Building a business without making sure your legal ducks are in a row is like building a house on sand.  It might looks nice for a while, but it isn’t sustainable.  Long-term and sustainable success requires attention to your legal foundation.  It is not something to be feared or avoided: it is something to embrace and celebrate.  Through Leverage a Lawyer and Leverage Legal Group, we have helped women business owners protect themselves and their companies for years, and we are very proud of that legacy.”

Winning Experience

Leverage A Lawyer was named New Company of the Year in the 2012 Stevie Awards for Women in Business, and Jessica won the Silver Stevie for Female Entrepreneur of the Year-Business Services.  “Winning these Stevie Awards has been an incredible experience,” commented Jessica.  “It immediately gave us a national and international platform, and credibility in the marketplace. I know it has enabled us to grow as a business and a brand in ways we could not have done without the recognition.”

Travel Tips

Jessica travels a lot on business and tells us that the two business apps she can’t live without when on the road are Evernote, an app that helps you to remember everything across all your computers and devices; and Tripit, an all-in-one travel organizer.

Motivation and Inspiration

Finally, we asked Jessica what makes her hit the ground running in the morning.  Her response: “I know my why.  I know why I do what I do and for whom I do it, namely my little girl.  I have spent a lot of time getting clarity on my calling and what I am meant to do on this planet.  When you know your purpose, it is easy to jump out of bed each morning.”

Jessica’s two passions early in life were to become either a professional singer or an actor, but now Jessica wouldn’t change a thing. She has ended up doing exactly what she wants to be doing because she made some radical changes a few years ago that enabled her to follow her heart and her passion for the law.

Jessica concluded:  “I surround myself with incredible colleagues and friends who also are living their purpose.  It has been said that you become the average of the five people you spend the most time with, and I take that seriously.  By being in daily contact with people whom I admire and who inspire me, I can find motivation even on tough days.”

5 Distinguished Chairs to Head 2013 Stevie Awards for Women in Business Final Judging Committees

Posted by Michelle Rutkowski on Thu, Oct 03, 2013 @ 01:13 PM

With the preliminary judging of this year’s Stevie® Awards for Women in Business about to wrap on October 6, the Stevie Awards are delighted to announce the names of the five distinguished women who will chair the final judging committees of the 2013 (10th annual) competition.

The Individual Awards categories, which recognize the achievements of individual women entrepreneurs, executives and employees, form the biggest category group in the Stevie Awards for Women in Business, so two committees have been formed:

2013 WIB Exec ChairMarcie Allen, president of New York City-based sponsorship and fulfillment agency MAC Presents, will chair the committee for the Best Executives Awards categories.

“As a woman in the music industry, recognition in the Stevie Awards has proved an effective tool for me to encourage more women to enter this industry,” stated Marcie recently. “As someone who has been in the music industry for 18 years, I want to inspire women and show them that anything is possible.  All power to the Stevie Awards for Women on its 10th Anniversary!”

Marcie is a seven-time nominee and two-time winner of Billboard Magazine's Concert Marketing and Promotion Award. She was named to Billboard’s Women in Music in 2010, 2011, and 2012, and to Billboard’s 40 under 40 in 2013. Earlier this year, The White House honored Marcie as one of their Hurricane Sandy "Champions of Change." The event highlighted people and organizations directly involved in response and recovery efforts following Hurricane Sandy. Marcie directed a documentary short, “Beach 119,” about her efforts in the Rockaways, New York, after the storm. Marcie leverages her eighteen years of music industry experience to negotiate high profile sponsorships between the world’s leading brands and artists. Recent clients include Jeep, Microsoft, Samsung, CITI, AT&T, and Nokia.

Prior to starting MAC, Marcie owned and operated MAD Booking & Events, which booked and produced music festivals across the country including On the Bricks in Atlanta, Georgia. Allen is on the board of directors for Musicians on Call and the TJ Martell Foundation.

2013 WIB Entrepreneur ChairThe final judging committee for the Best Entrepreneur Awards categories will be chaired by Kristen White, CEO of Creative Catapult, LLC/Instant Celebrity Academy in St. Louis, Missouri, USA, and host of “Let’s Start A Ripple” TV. Kristen is a media expert who helps entrepreneurs, authors, speakers, life coaches, and businesses become more powerful messengers through content creation and on-camera coaching. Kristen works with clients to create media-based marketing platforms including television, radio, iPad magazines, and multi-media books. Her company, Creative Catapult, LLC, is a media coaching and video production company for the wellness and personal development marketplace.

Kristen has more than a decade of experience as a television journalist and anchor. Her new show, Let’s start a Ripple, which debuted in January 2013, is a news-style talk show that features experts in personal development, wellness and spirituality. The show is broadcast on The Wisdom Channel on Google TV, HULU, and on mainstream media. It is produced in the ABC TV studio in St. Louis, Missouri, and on location in Sedona, Arizona, in California, and in New York.

In addition to a Gold Stevie Awards for Video of the Year and for Mentor/Coach of the Year, Kristen received the Bronze Stevie Award for Female Entrepreneur of the Year in the 2012 Women in Business Awards. Her industry awards include the Platinum “Best in Show” Award for Video and a Gold Award for Video in the 2012 Aurora Awards.

Grace & Game designs are made in the USA with sustainable fabrics and are designed to perform beautifully both on and off the course.  She is also founder and CEO of Untoxicating Beauty, a new subscription beauty experience for women who care as much about what goes into their bodies as what they put on them.

Where Are They Now? 2009 Stevie Awards Winner Mary Tappouni

Posted by Michael Gallagher on Sun, Aug 25, 2013 @ 12:43 PM

2013 marks the 10th anniversary of the Stevie® Awards for Women in Business, the world's top honors for female entrepreneurs, executives, employees, and the organizations they run.

As we approach the entry deadlines for the 2013 competition we'll look back at some of the women who have won Stevie Awards over the past decade.  We'll catch up with them on their current activities, and learn what their Stevie win meant to them and their careers.

Today's profile is of 2009 Stevie winner Mary Tappouni.

Mary Tappouni, president and owner of Breaking Ground Contracting, a Northeast Florida construction and cevelopment company with a special focus on green building, is a two-time winner in the Stevie Awards for Women in Business.  Most recently, as a Best Entrepreneur winner in 2009, Tappouni was busy growing and adding employees to her contracting firm.  While revenue was increasing, intentional emphasis was placed on growing various areas of the business.  In the same year she earned her second Stevie, her firm was recognized as one of Jacksonville, Fla.'s fastest-growing companies, and Tappouni earned the Small Business Person of the Year Award for the State of Florida through the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA).

Mary TappouniThis year, Tappouni celebrates 16 successful years in business, and is proud to say she conquered some of the contracting and construction industry’s most challenging years, on the heels of her awards recognition.  The Stevie Awards helped raise awareness of her firm's quality and growth.

Tappouni realizes just how important it is to become nationally, even internationally recognized.  Competing for Stevie Awards helped her see how her innovative contracting business stacks up against firms outside of her immediate geographic area.  The Stevie Award wins have helped Tappouni achieve that level of awareness, affording her and her firm greater, broader recognition.

“Having the opportunity to be included in the Stevie Awards program -- not once but twice -- is an extremely exciting and humbling experience. Just being in the room with so many impressive organizations and people inspires us to make ourselves and our business better.”

The entry deadline for the 2013 edition of the Stevie Awards for Women in Business is August 28, and late entries will be accepted through September 25 with payment of a nominal late fee.  Complete entry details are available at www.StevieAwards.com/Women.

Where Are They Now? 2004 Stevie Awards Winner Myrna Hoffman

Posted by Michael Gallagher on Thu, Aug 22, 2013 @ 10:37 AM

2013 marks the 10th anniversary of the Stevie Awards for Women in Business, the world's top honors for female entrepreneurs, executives, employees, and the organizations they run.

As we approach the entry deadlines for the 2013 competition we'll look back at some of the women who have won Stevie Awards over the past decade.  We'll catch up with them on their current activities, and learn what their Stevie win meant to them and their careers.

Today's profile is of 2004 Stevie winner Myrna Hoffman.

Myrna Hoffman is Managing Director of OOZ & OZ, an innovative optical illusion toy company, and was one of the handful of winners in the very first year of the Stevie Awards for Women in Business.  Prior to winning the Stevie for the Best New Product of the Year in 2004, she was focused on growing her small business. Hoffman’s unique products were earning national toy awards (13 top honors), and she personally had received two business honors.

Myrna HoffmanThe Stevie Award was a stimulus to her business growth.  Seven months after winning the Stevie and relocating from Virginia to Seattle, Wash. USA, Hoffman rebranded and expanded both her concept and product line. Hoffman’s science-based art toys and activities -now called “Morph-O-Scopes” (shortened from the formal technical term “anamorphoscope”) currently consist of more than a dozen engaging anamorphic products and services.  Recognition within the toy sector has doubled to 25 coveted top toy awards. Universal kudos from kids, parents, educators and child development experts alike continue to flow in.

After Hoffman produced her first anamorphic party activities, a friend asked her to create a special set to keep her young daughter entertained on their long transoceanic flight. That request became the genesis of Hoffman’s first Mirror-aculous Circus Art Activities Kit.  The child, now in her 20s, recently went to work for Spark Publications and learned that her new boss, too, was a Stevie Award recipient.  This further cemented the level of respect given to the Stevie for Hoffman.

“The awareness of the Stevie Awards for Women in Business program is spreading.  I am honored to have been recognized for my company’s creativity and was intrigued to find out that my when my friend’s daughter (who knew I had won a Stevie) entered the workforce, she began working for another Stevie Award recipient.  This increasingly popular platform is helping take women in business further and creating more opportunities for acknowledgement of their efforts.”

The entry deadline for the 2013 edition of the Stevie Awards for Women in Business is August 28.  Learn how to submit your nominations at www.StevieAwards.com/Women.
