Stevie Awards Winner and Judge Jessica Eaves Mathews Talks Winning, Judging, and Lawyering

Posted by Michael Gallagher on Thu, Nov 07, 2013 @ 01:54 PM

Jessica Eaves Mathews is CEO of Leverage a Lawyer LLC in Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA and chaired the final judging committee for the Company/Organization categories of the 2013 Stevie Awards for Women in Business, the world's top honors for female entrepreneurs, executives, employees, and the organizations they run.  We talked to Jessica about judging, the law, and what motivates her day-to-day life.

Jessica Eaves Mathews was enthusiastic about the Stevies judging process.  “It was amazing to win several Stevie Awards last year, but an even greater honor to be asked to chair the final judging committee for the categories in which we were honored,” Jessica told us.

Jessica Eaves Mathews“It wasn’t until I did the judging this year that I realized how truly incredible it was that my company and I both won awards last year.  The caliber of companies and women who were Finalists in this year’s Women in Business Awards was staggering.  I found myself inspired to do more and make a bigger impact as a result of the work they are doing in the world.  What an accomplished, amazing group of women!”

Legal Advice

As the founder of Leverage a Lawyer, we couldn’t let Jessica go without asking for legal advice, specifically what working women should know about the law that could contribute to their success.

“I always say that addressing the legal foundation for your business makes a powerful and profound statement,” said Jessica.  “It is sending the message to the world that you are to be taken seriously, and it is honoring your hard work as a business owner or innovator.”

According to Jessica:  “Building a business without making sure your legal ducks are in a row is like building a house on sand.  It might looks nice for a while, but it isn’t sustainable.  Long-term and sustainable success requires attention to your legal foundation.  It is not something to be feared or avoided: it is something to embrace and celebrate.  Through Leverage a Lawyer and Leverage Legal Group, we have helped women business owners protect themselves and their companies for years, and we are very proud of that legacy.”

Winning Experience

Leverage A Lawyer was named New Company of the Year in the 2012 Stevie Awards for Women in Business, and Jessica won the Silver Stevie for Female Entrepreneur of the Year-Business Services.  “Winning these Stevie Awards has been an incredible experience,” commented Jessica.  “It immediately gave us a national and international platform, and credibility in the marketplace. I know it has enabled us to grow as a business and a brand in ways we could not have done without the recognition.”

Travel Tips

Jessica travels a lot on business and tells us that the two business apps she can’t live without when on the road are Evernote, an app that helps you to remember everything across all your computers and devices; and Tripit, an all-in-one travel organizer.

Motivation and Inspiration

Finally, we asked Jessica what makes her hit the ground running in the morning.  Her response: “I know my why.  I know why I do what I do and for whom I do it, namely my little girl.  I have spent a lot of time getting clarity on my calling and what I am meant to do on this planet.  When you know your purpose, it is easy to jump out of bed each morning.”

Jessica’s two passions early in life were to become either a professional singer or an actor, but now Jessica wouldn’t change a thing. She has ended up doing exactly what she wants to be doing because she made some radical changes a few years ago that enabled her to follow her heart and her passion for the law.

Jessica concluded:  “I surround myself with incredible colleagues and friends who also are living their purpose.  It has been said that you become the average of the five people you spend the most time with, and I take that seriously.  By being in daily contact with people whom I admire and who inspire me, I can find motivation even on tough days.”

Posted by Michael Gallagher on Thu, Oct 31, 2013 @ 11:35 AM

The awards dinner of the 2013 (10th annual) Stevie Awards for Women in Business, in New York on Friday, November 8, is sold out. Winners of the Grand, Gold, Silver, and Bronze Stevie Awards will be announced that night in the world's top honors for women executives, entrepreneurs, employees, and the organizations they run.

SAWIB13 Program CoverThe Stevie Award placements were determined from among the finalists by 90 members of five final judging committees during online judging from October 14-23.  Their average scores determined the Stevie-winner placements.  (Finalists were determined by the average scores of 150 preliminary judges over six weeks starting in early September.)

We can't thank these great professionals enough for their help in determining this year's women in business awards winners.  Here are the members of the five final judging committees.

5 Distinguished Chairs to Head 2013 Stevie Awards for Women in Business Final Judging Committees

Posted by Michelle Rutkowski on Thu, Oct 03, 2013 @ 01:13 PM
With the preliminary judging of this year’s Stevie® Awards for Women in Business about to wrap on October 6, the Stevie Awards are delighted to announce the names of the five distinguished women who will chair the final judging committees of the 2013 (10th annual) competition.

The Individual Awards categories, which recognize the achievements of individual women entrepreneurs, executives and employees, form the biggest category group in the Stevie Awards for Women in Business, so two committees have been formed:

2013 WIB Exec ChairMarcie Allen, president of New York City-based sponsorship and fulfillment agency MAC Presents, will chair the committee for the Best Executives Awards categories.

“As a woman in the music industry, recognition in the Stevie Awards has proved an effective tool for me to encourage more women to enter this industry,” stated Marcie recently. “As someone who has been in the music industry for 18 years, I want to inspire women and show them that anything is possible.  All power to the Stevie Awards for Women on its 10th Anniversary!”

Marcie is a seven-time nominee and two-time winner of Billboard Magazine's Concert Marketing and Promotion Award. She was named to Billboard’s Women in Music in 2010, 2011, and 2012, and to Billboard’s 40 under 40 in 2013. Earlier this year, The White House honored Marcie as one of their Hurricane Sandy "Champions of Change." The event highlighted people and organizations directly involved in response and recovery efforts following Hurricane Sandy. Marcie directed a documentary short, “Beach 119,” about her efforts in the Rockaways, New York, after the storm. Marcie leverages her eighteen years of music industry experience to negotiate high profile sponsorships between the world’s leading brands and artists. Recent clients include Jeep, Microsoft, Samsung, CITI, AT&T, and Nokia.

Prior to starting MAC, Marcie owned and operated MAD Booking & Events, which booked and produced music festivals across the country including On the Bricks in Atlanta, Georgia. Allen is on the board of directors for Musicians on Call and the TJ Martell Foundation.

Where Are They Now? 2009 Stevie Awards Winner Mary Tappouni

Posted by Michael Gallagher on Sun, Aug 25, 2013 @ 12:43 PM

2013 marks the 10th anniversary of the Stevie® Awards for Women in Business, the world's top honors for female entrepreneurs, executives, employees, and the organizations they run.

As we approach the entry deadlines for the 2013 competition we'll look back at some of the women who have won Stevie Awards over the past decade.  We'll catch up with them on their current activities, and learn what their Stevie win meant to them and their careers.

Today's profile is of 2009 Stevie winner Mary Tappouni.

Mary Tappouni, president and owner of Breaking Ground Contracting, a Northeast Florida construction and cevelopment company with a special focus on green building, is a two-time winner in the Stevie Awards for Women in Business.  Most recently, as a Best Entrepreneur winner in 2009, Tappouni was busy growing and adding employees to her contracting firm.  While revenue was increasing, intentional emphasis was placed on growing various areas of the business.  In the same year she earned her second Stevie, her firm was recognized as one of Jacksonville, Fla.'s fastest-growing companies, and Tappouni earned the Small Business Person of the Year Award for the State of Florida through the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA).

Mary TappouniThis year, Tappouni celebrates 16 successful years in business, and is proud to say she conquered some of the contracting and construction industry’s most challenging years, on the heels of her awards recognition.  The Stevie Awards helped raise awareness of her firm's quality and growth.

Tappouni realizes just how important it is to become nationally, even internationally recognized.  Competing for Stevie Awards helped her see how her innovative contracting business stacks up against firms outside of her immediate geographic area.  The Stevie Award wins have helped Tappouni achieve that level of awareness, affording her and her firm greater, broader recognition.

“Having the opportunity to be included in the Stevie Awards program -- not once but twice -- is an extremely exciting and humbling experience. Just being in the room with so many impressive organizations and people inspires us to make ourselves and our business better.”

The entry deadline for the 2013 edition of the Stevie Awards for Women in Business is August 28, and late entries will be accepted through September 25 with payment of a nominal late fee.  Complete entry details are available at www.StevieAwards.com/Women.

Where Are They Now? 2004 Stevie Awards Winner Myrna Hoffman

Posted by Michael Gallagher on Thu, Aug 22, 2013 @ 10:37 AM

2013 marks the 10th anniversary of the Stevie Awards for Women in Business, the world's top honors for female entrepreneurs, executives, employees, and the organizations they run.

As we approach the entry deadlines for the 2013 competition we'll look back at some of the women who have won Stevie Awards over the past decade.  We'll catch up with them on their current activities, and learn what their Stevie win meant to them and their careers.

Today's profile is of 2004 Stevie winner Myrna Hoffman.

Myrna Hoffman is Managing Director of OOZ & OZ, an innovative optical illusion toy company, and was one of the handful of winners in the very first year of the Stevie Awards for Women in Business.  Prior to winning the Stevie for the Best New Product of the Year in 2004, she was focused on growing her small business. Hoffman’s unique products were earning national toy awards (13 top honors), and she personally had received two business honors.

Myrna HoffmanThe Stevie Award was a stimulus to her business growth.  Seven months after winning the Stevie and relocating from Virginia to Seattle, Wash. USA, Hoffman rebranded and expanded both her concept and product line. Hoffman’s science-based art toys and activities -now called “Morph-O-Scopes” (shortened from the formal technical term “anamorphoscope”) currently consist of more than a dozen engaging anamorphic products and services.  Recognition within the toy sector has doubled to 25 coveted top toy awards. Universal kudos from kids, parents, educators and child development experts alike continue to flow in.

After Hoffman produced her first anamorphic party activities, a friend asked her to create a special set to keep her young daughter entertained on their long transoceanic flight. That request became the genesis of Hoffman’s first Mirror-aculous Circus Art Activities Kit.  The child, now in her 20s, recently went to work for Spark Publications and learned that her new boss, too, was a Stevie Award recipient.  This further cemented the level of respect given to the Stevie for Hoffman.

“The awareness of the Stevie Awards for Women in Business program is spreading.  I am honored to have been recognized for my company’s creativity and was intrigued to find out that my when my friend’s daughter (who knew I had won a Stevie) entered the workforce, she began working for another Stevie Award recipient.  This increasingly popular platform is helping take women in business further and creating more opportunities for acknowledgement of their efforts.”

The entry deadline for the 2013 edition of the Stevie Awards for Women in Business is August 28.  Learn how to submit your nominations at www.StevieAwards.com/Women.

How a Female CEO Succeeds in Male-Dominated Financial Services

Posted by Michael Gallagher on Thu, May 05, 2011 @ 12:39 PM
With the month-away launch of the call for entries for the 8th annual Stevie Awards for Women in Business, here's a profile of Debralee L. Goldberg, president and CEO of International Financial Data Services Canada in Toronto, named Best Canadian Executive in the 2010 Stevies for Women in Business.

Debralee GoldbergSince joining IFDS Canada as CEO in 2006, Debralee Goldberg has compiled an impressive record as a female chief executive in the traditionally male- dominated world of financial services. IFDS Canada’s operating income has risen by nearly 300%, and the number of clients has grown by 30%. Three of IFDS Canada’s 10 largest accounts were signed on in 2009–10.

Debralee Goldberg’s impact as CEO extends beyond the usual operating numbers, however, and includes initiatives in technology, the environment, and community giving.

Debralee began her 30-year career as an entry-level call-center employee in a Boston bank’s mutual fund division. Over the next eight years, she earned a number of management-level promotions, took additional courses, and learned the mutual fund business. She then took a five-year break to raise her family.

After her return, she rose to the executive ranks of First Data Investor Services, a spin-off from American Express, and then joined Kansas City-based DST Systems Inc. before being tapped to run IFDS Canada.

Reducing Environmental Impact
Since arriving in Toronto, Debralee’s solid understanding of mutual fund operations has allowed her to contribute as a board member of FundSERV, the Canadian financial-funds network responsible for managing intercompany settlements. Her deep knowledge has also enabled her to identify and champion ideas to improve client relations and operating efficiency, and to reduce the environmental impact of IFDS Canada. For example, new smart-screen technology has eliminated the company’s need to print received forms for data entry. In addition to eliminating paper, this advance increased data entry productivity by 60% and reduced by 70% the number of items requiring quality review.

Similarly, a new touch-screen solution now allows IFDS Canada mailroom associates to distribute incoming documents without printing and attaching paper routing instructions. This innovation has reduced monthly mailroom paper use by 50%.

Debralee is raising environmental awareness in other ways at IFDS Canada. She created a green-initiatives committee, has reduced travel with the use of VOIP and other e-meeting technologies, conducts annual green-awareness campaigns, and has supported distribution of reusable thermal lunch bags, drink bottles, and coffee mugs to all employees. As part of her personal commitment, she walks to work nearly every day.

Improved Technology
Technology improvements introduced under Debralee have reduced IFDS Canada’s carbon footprint and resulted in the deployment of these technologies by IFDS affiliates. They also contributed to IFDS Canada’s two software awards in 2009 and 2010: Best Use of Technology at the Canadian Investment Awards, and Progress Software’s SaaS Excellence Award.

Under Debralee’s leadership, the company continues to seek new ways to improve, spending more than $20 million annually on research and development.

Corporate Giving
Debralee recognizes the importance of giving back. In 2010, IFDS Canada’s charitable giving was on track to rise 350% over 2008. Employee participation in the same period increased nearly 50%.

Today IFDS supports more than 25 charities, including the Pediatric Oncology Group of Ontario, Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, University Settlement, the Hospital for Sick Kids, HopeSpring Cancer Support Centre, and United Way.

Upon receiving her Stevie Award for Best Canadian Executive last November, Goldberg commented: “I am very much honored to be recognized by the Stevie Awards for Women in Business. Not only as the rare woman in a male-dominated world of financial services, but also as it reinforces the value of—and our commitment to—increasing customer satisfaction, increasing operational efficiency for our clients, contributing to worthy charities, and reducing our carbon footprint.”

2 Talents That Make a Top Entrepreneur, From a Business Awards Winner

Posted by Michael Gallagher on Thu, May 05, 2011 @ 10:52 AM

Today is the absolutely the last day we can accept entries for The 9th American Business Awards, and next Wednesday is the entry deadline for The 8th International Business Awards, but it's almost time to start thinking about this year's Stevie Awards for Women in Business, which will open for entries within a month.  Mary Reilly-Magee, Owner and Founder of Love to Swim and Tumble School in San Antonio, Texas USA, was named Best Entrepreneur in a Service Business (Up to 100 Employees) in the 2010 Stevies for Women in Business.

0511LovetoSwimMary Reilly-Magee is the embodiment of the two talents that make a top entrepreneur: Determination and Passion.  She is an extremely determined businesswoman, and she is passionate about the prevention of drowning.  She is also passionate about lifelong learning and about building relationships.

Mary taught swimming while earning her bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Texas at San Antonio. She taught English and coached the swimming and water polo teams at Holmes High School for 5 years while directing the summer night lesson program at Northside Aquatics. In 1998 she resigned from high school teaching to focus on her young family.

Mary began coaching at local area pools and fitness centers, but was frustrated by having to deal with facility issues and scheduling conflicts. She wanted to provide a more stable environment that would better facilitate teaching children and adults how to swim. Inspired by her vision and dedication, Mary’s friends and family decided to pitch in and lend her the start-up money she needed to build her own facility.

Love to Swim School, founded in 2001, was the direct result of this combination of determination and passion. It quickly became successful and profitable.

Expansion
After paying back her family and friends, Mary decided she wanted to do more to develop children’s fitness, so she incorporated a tumble facility into her swim school. Mary firmly believes that children that roll on mats, jump on trampolines, and balance on beams develop neurological connections that give them an academic edge over non-active children. Characteristics introduced in the gym such as risk-taking, focusing, following directions, and having an “I can” attitude lead to similar behaviors in the classroom.

By 2008, the renamed Love to Swim and Tumble School’s sales had grown exponentially, allowing Mary to expand her reach and open a second location in 2009.

Mary’s swim schools had taught over 37,000 swim lessons by 2010. Currently, Mary is planning to open additional locations to provide more children with the opportunity to learn.

A Reputation for Excellence
With its two unique indoor facilities, Love to Swim and Tumble School is able to offer swim and tumble lessons year-round. Mary has developed a progressive approach for teaching, and the coaches on her staff are required to undergo extensive ongoing training. With her child-centered teaching philosophy, parental involvement, and highly trained staff, Mary’s facilities have a well-earned reputation for excellence.

A certified Texas educator, Mary has established herself as an expert in her industry and has written numerous articles for various publications. She constantly seeks to engage and involve parents in their children's learning through newsletters and by offering informational sessions while their kids swim.

Mary speaks at various parenting groups and industry tradeshows, and she provides free drowning-prevention demonstrations to students in local elementary schools. She has been a presenter at the American Swimming Coaches Association SwimAmerica™ National Conference and at the U.S. Swim School Association Annual Spring Conference. She currently serves as the Vice President and President-Elect of the U.S. Swim School Association, a national organization of professional aquatic directors.

About Mary Reilly-Magee
Mary Reilly-Magee, an athlete, passionate instructor, savvy businesswoman, and mom, has spent the last 25 years of her life teaching students of all ages to swim. She is the founder of the San Antonio-based Love to Swim and Tumble School, and the current president-elect of the U.S. Swim School Association. Mary has presented at numerous national and local conferences as well as to “Mothers of Preschoolers” and parent-teacher organizations.

About Love to Swim and Tumble Schools
