FunkkOFF! was formed in 2019 by two lifelong friends, Joelle Flynn and Sonia Hounsell. Their friendship started in seventh grade when they attended a small all-girls Catholic school where they learned about teamwork, integrity, and responsibility.

On July 2, 2021, they officially launched FunkkOFF! TeethRefreshers®, a unique two-in-one toothbrush plus toothpaste product that is reusable (30x), 100% natural, vegan, and offers on-the-go teeth whitening.

The genesis for the product occurred when Joelle was wine tasting in Napa. She loved her red wine but loved her white teeth more—Joelle carried around a toothbrush and toothpaste to remove the purple “Funkk™” “OFF!” of her teeth. One time, Joelle pulled out her lipstick and thought, “Why isn’t there something compact, reusable, and easy to use like my lipstick—but to refresh my teeth?” 

Joelle began inventing a solution and eventually filed eight US patents on her designs and three US trademarks. She joined forces with Sonia who had spent decades in brand management in major consumer packaged goods companies. They worked together to refine the product design and usability and build a supply chain to manufacture the product. They formulated their proprietary tooth gel and completed product development in early 2021. Now they have 10 US patents (Utility & Design) and one Patent Cooperation Treaty Patent.

Growing Product Demand
TeethRefreshers grew steadily with a robust direct-to-consumer business on their website and Amazon and sold out in just three months. When back in stock, they entered the retail market and have since gained distribution in 90+ stores in 40+ states. They were discovered organically and listed by a number of retailers including SHEN Beauty and Uncommon Goods. They were also discovered by the QVC Personal Care Buyer and received a large Purchase Order and airdate of August 28, 2023.

FunkkOFF! achieved international recognition in February 2023 when featured on Shark Tank Season 14 Episode 14 and received a $250,000 deal from Robert Herjavec. After the appearance and unanimous rave reviews by all the Sharks, demand has since skyrocketed. Sales in the first six months of 2023 were 350% higher than 2022. When FunkkOFF sold out in the first quarter, consumers placed preorders and were willing to wait three or more months for delivery.

Joelle and Sonia created the product and manufacturing supply chain from virtually nothing and have built a successful company with tremendous demand. Joelle's persistence in the early years led to extensive patent work which puts her among the 2.5% of women-only patent holders.

As minority business owners, they compete against oral care giants but also prioritize giving back. A portion of their sales is donated to Girls on the Run, which helps young women entrepreneurs find their potential and pursue their dreams.

Pixel Pioneer Porotech Develops Game-Changing MicroLED Display Technology

announced the world’s first demonstration of an "all-in-one" full-color display of microLED pixels in October 2022, driven by Porotech’s proprietary DynamicPixelTuning® (DPT®) technology that allows a single pixel to display the full-color spectrum.

Porotech’s disruptive DPT technology aims to revolutionize the display industry. While traditional microLED displays are made up of separate RGB sub-pixels to display full color, DPT technology allows a single microLED pixel to display any color in the visible spectrum, including bright white.

In traditional microLED displays, red sub-pixels are currently made with a different material to green and blue, creating a complicated supply chain, with high levels of waste and inefficiencies. However, Porotech has harnessed a new proprietary material, PoroGaN®, which can display any color on the spectrum. This simplifies and improves the design of the display and optical system and removes major manufacturing roadblocks.

With a monolithic pixel, colors are no longer constrained by the three primary colors, which significantly expands the available range. In addition, by replacing the traditional four sub-pixel format with a single microLED, this technology can increase pixel density of any given display four-fold. This creates substantial improvements in resolution and screen brightness, which is particularly important on small form factor displays, such as wearables and augmented reality (AR)/virtual reality (VR) headsets.Porotech guys

Similarly, a monolithic pixel can also lower costs and produce higher yields for large area displays such as video walls and automotive applications, as it eliminates two mass transfer steps in the manufacturing process.

Greater flexibility, simplicity, and lower power consumption of the whole optical design can be achieved when DPT is used as the basis for the technology, supporting the production of more sustainable displays. Furthermore, DPT removes the need for mass transfer, reducing the costly waste involved in microLED production and making DPT a supply chain-ready solution, massively simplifying display manufacture.

Described in 2023 as "the most impressive technology at CES" by display technology expert Karl Guttag, the improvements in resolution, color, brightness, and efficiency can revolutionize consumer technologies like wearables, AR, and VR.

The manufacturing benefits afforded by DPT requiring only one material to produce will solve expensive challenges that major corporate R&D teams have struggled with for years, with companies like Apple, Meta, and Samsung investing considerable resources into achieving a monolithic pixel.

Porotech is currently working with major original equipment manufacturer channel partners that will build DPT technology into their products to sell to consumers. Initial proof of principle projects will then develop into nonrecurring engineering co-developments and eventually IP licensing or manufacturing supply relationships to proliferate the technology across multiple applications and worldwide.

Regen Power Generates Steady Growth While Providing Sustainable Energy Solutions

With a strong emphasis on innovation, Regen has deployed various off-grid solutions for the mining sector as well as for resorts across the country. Outside of Australia, they have commissioned ground-mounted, utility-scale solar farms in Malaysia and Vietnam. Regen Power is also proud to have installed the largest floating solar power plant in India.

Amid the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, Regen Power proactively launched the "Regen Solar Academy”, an online training program that equips individuals with the necessary skills for employment in the solar industry. Managing Director Nikhil Jayaraj won a Gold Stevie® Award for Best Energy Entrepreneur. Nikhil's journey at Regen Power began in 2010, where he then steadily progressed to Managing Director. With his efforts, he has greatly contributed to transforming Regen into a thriving commercial enterprise.

Under Nikhil's leadership, Regen Power has become a renowned brand in Australia. With over 40,000 solar installations totaling 200MW, they generate 800,000 units of clean energy daily, equivalent to planting six million trees annually and avoiding significant carbon emissions. His visionary approach also led to the commercialization of HybridGen, a patented next-gen variable-speed diesel generator integrated with solar, wind, and battery technology.

Recognizing the need for innovation, Nikhil drove Regen to invest more in research and development, securing grants from the Australian Research Council. He also delivered a keynote presentation at the World Renewable Energy Conference in 2022 to expand awareness.

Nikhil's commitment to education and mentorship is reflected in his mentorship of 50 students. He is also committed to his own learning, as evidenced by his pursuit of a PhD on the topic of "Transition towards solar energy storage: A multi-level perspective." His research aims to guide electricity retailers, customers, and manufacturers in embracing sustainable energy solutions.
